Oregon Doesn’t Have Any Laws Banning College Football Props

  • Oregon doesn't have any laws banning college football props, the Oregon Lottery commission opted out of it to avoid friction with the NCAA.
  • Tribal casinos in Oregon offer college betting, but that comes with less desirable odds as competition like DraftKings doesn’t offer a college sports market of any kind in Oregon.
  • Residents can legally bet on college football props in Oregon with internationally-licensed sportsbooks like Bovada that offer a bigger props catalogue.

EUGENE, Ore. – Most states either have a regulated sports betting industry or they don’t, but when it comes to college football props, it gets more complicated than a simple yes or no. That’s especially the case in Oregon, where the law says it’s legal to bet on college football props in Oregon but their state-partnered sportsbook doesn’t offer any college football odds.

The simple answer to “Can I bet on college football props in Oregon” is yes, technically. Although you won’t find any props at DraftKings, it’s not because there are laws banning college football betting in Oregon.

Why Doesn’t DraftKings Offer College Sports Betting In Oregon?

DraftKings doesn’t offer any betting on college sports because the Oregon Lottery decided they don’t want to cause friction with the NCAA. They made this decision back in 2019, well before DraftKings Oregon launched in January of 2022.

Oregon actually got ahead of the game, since NCAA President Charlie Baker has expressed his desire to remove college prop betting across the country in 2024. States like Ohio, Louisiana, Vermont, and Maryland implemented college player prop betting bans this year after discussions with Baker and state officials.

Still, Oregonians want to bet on college sports and lawmakers have since pushed the Oregon Lottery to add college football betting. However, strong opposition from Oregon tribes and anti-gambling organizations put these attempts to an end.

The last attempt was through Senate Bill 1503 in 2022, which would’ve added betting on the outcome of college sports games but not on individual player performance. Even without CFB player props involved, the bill faced major pushback from tribes that run the state’s casinos due to concerns over lost revenue.

The casinos with college sports betting are found on tribal lands, typically far from major Oregon cities like Portland. If DraftKings hosted college football betting online, a slim number of people would continue going to the casinos to place their wagers.

These Oregon tribal-owned casinos offer college betting markets, but only some have player props. Tribal casinos operate under a different set of laws than U.S. licensed sportsbooks like DraftKings, making it possible to offer the exclusive land-based college football props market in Oregon.

However, internationally-licensed online sportsbooks like Bovada also legally offer college football prop betting in Oregon under this same logic. Online betting sites like Bovada and BetOnline provide Oregonians with many different betting props for each game, every week.
