Why Did Ohio Ban College Player Prop Betting?
In February of 2024, roughly a year into having regulated sports betting, Ohio made a move to protect student athletes by removing college player props from local regulated sportsbooks. The Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) wanted to focus betting attention on team outcomes and avoid harmful threats against student athletes.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and NCAA President Charlie Baker submitted a formal proposal to prohibit college prop betting in Ohio regulated sportsbooks. The Ohio Casino Control Commission’s Executive Director Matthew Schuler decided to comply and issued the ban, citing concerns of player safety, betting integrity, and risk of match fixing.
So Which Ohio Sportsbooks Have College Football Props?
The OCC’s college prop betting ban applies to state-regulated sportsbooks in Ohio. Eight sportsbooks in Ohio objected to the NCAA’s request, but sportsbooks like DraftKings, FanDuel, and more must comply with the regulations.
However, internationally-licensed sportsbooks aren’t regulated by the Ohio Casino Control Commission and can legally offer college football props in Ohio. College football betting sites like Bovada and BetOnline have accepted US players for over a decade thanks to their international licensing.
