Why Louisiana Banned College Prop Betting at Regulated Sportsbooks

  • Louisiana prohibited state-licensed sportsbooks from offering college player prop betting.
  • The Louisiana Gaming Control Board made the decision in April and it went into effect on Aug. 1.
  • News of NFL wide receiver Kayshon Boutte illegally betting on games during his time with the LSU Tigers also impacted the decision.

BATON ROUGE, La. – As of August 1, individual prop bets on college athletes at Louisiana-licensed sportsbooks are banned. The Louisiana Gaming Control Board (LGCB) made the decision back in April in response to NCAA President Charlie Baker’s call to action.

Why Louisiana Banned College Prop Betting at Regulated Sportsbooks - What To Know

Ronnie Johns, chairman of the LGCB, cited the integrity of sports betting and integrity of college athletics as a whole. The NCAA recently reached out to states to consider prohibiting betting on individual college football props, but Johns said they’ve been working towards a prop ban before that request.

The real spark to banning college football prop betting in Louisiana at regulated sportsbooks was the Kayshon Boutte betting scandal. Boutte, a current NFL wide receiver and former LSU Tigers star, was arrested in January for illegal sports betting charges.

Boutte created a sports betting account with a fake name and funded the account with his mother’s credit card. He was 20 years old at the time, so he was charged with a misdemeanor count of underage gambling and a felony charge of computer fraud.

“We had the Kayshon Boutte situation here; former LSU football player who was placing prop bets on himself,” said Johns to local news. “That kind of brought it to light of what might be going on out there.”

The charges have since been dropped but Boutte allegedly placed more than 8,900 illegal bets, including at least six bets on LSU Tigers football props. He made more than $500,000 in winnings but most of those were used to place more bets.

Boutte even bet on his own college football player prop, betting he would get over 82.5 receiving yards and score at least one touchdown in a Sept. 4, 2022 game against the Florida State Seminoles. He had just two receptions for 20 yards and no touchdowns in that game.

Louisiana College Prop Ban Only Applies To State-Regulated Books

Although Louisiana residents won’t find college football props on Caesars, FanDuel, and other regulated sportsbooks, they can find props at internationally-licensed sportsbooks like Bovada. These sportsbooks are regulated and licensed outside of Louisiana but legally accept players from the Bayou State.
