Alabama Favored To Make CFP; Miami, South Carolina Still Looking In

  • Alabama has -300 odds to make the College Football Playoffs.
  • There are +400 odds for South Carolina to make the CFP.
  • Miami’s odds to make the playoffs are +750.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.Selection Sunday is looming and there are three teams that are praying to make it in that the committee will need to decide on. Those teams are the Alabama Crimson Tide, South Carolina Gamecocks, and Miami Hurricanes.

As of right now, college football prop betting sites are all in on Alabama taking one of, if not the final playoff spot.

There are two scenarios that could play out with one of them being only one spot up for grabs for the three teams and the other being two spots available and both of them lie in the hands of the ACC Championship game. There are also 10 spots all but confirmed right now that are already filled.

10 “Confirmed” Playoff Spots

  • Oregon (Big 10 Champ.)
  • Texas (SEC Champ.)
  • SMU/Clemson (ACC Champ.)
  • Boise State (Highest Ranked G5 Champ.)
  • Georgia
  • Penn State
  • Notre Dame
  • Tennessee
  • Indiana
  • Big 12 Champion

The first scenario where two teams between Alabama, Miami, and South Carolina could make it comes only if SMU wins the ACC. SMU is already ranked inside of the top-12 and them winning would earn them a first-round bye in the playoffs as one of the top 4 teams. Clemson is ranked outside of the top-12 with their loss to South Carolina in the regular season finale so there is no chance for them to earn an at large bid.

The second scenario where it would be just one spot available would be if Clemson were to win the ACC. If Clemson won, they would lock in a playoff spot and a first round bye, however, SMU is ranked high enough where they could earn an at large bid being that they are ranked inside of the top-10 going into the title game and taking up an 11th spot leaving just one more up for grabs.

Alabama College Football Playoff Odds (-300)

College football sportsbooks and the playoff committee can pull off a heist for the second straight year and hand Alabama a spot in the playoffs. Many argue that that their resume is strong enough to hoist them in with wins over then #2 Georgia, #21 Missouri, #15 LSU, and now ranked #15 South Carolina.

However, they have some bad losses to unranked teams in Vanderbilt and another to Oklahoma where they were manhandled 24-3.

The Crimson Tide have made the CFP in eight of the last ten seasons and the committee has their bias towards them so bettors can trust the strong odds on them getting in.

South Carolina College Football Playoff Odds (+400)

The Gamecocks are more than deserving of a spot in the playoffs even with three losses. Those losses all came to top-20 opponents in #16 LSU, #12 Ole Miss, and #7 Alabama. Also, their losses to LSU and Alabama came by just three points or less which the committee does take into consideration.

As for their wins, they have ranked wins over #10 Texas A&M, #23 Missouri, and #12 Clemson. Their wins over Oklahoma and Vanderbilt also help being that both of them have wins over Alabama.

They have the 11th strongest resume to finish the season and 15th toughest preseason strength of schedule. That said, they have a real shot of making it in even if they do jump Alabama for the final spot.

Miami College Football Playoff Odds (+750)

To keep things short and sweet, do not trust Miami’s odds to make the college football playoffs. First off, their resume ranks outside of the top 12, and their strength of schedule ranks 55 in the country meaning they’ve had a cakewalk the whole way through.

While many can argue that the Canes offense is elite which it is, their defense is very suspect. In conference play, they allowed six of eight opponents to score four or more touchdowns on them. This also resulted in them losing two of their last three games to unranked opponents.

Sticking with ranked opponents, they did not play one this season at all which the committee is sure to take into consideration.
